Whether it's tapanyaki or sushi, if you are in Charles Town and want Japanese food come here. Miao soup is flavorful but not over salty. Have had 6 different rolls and all were good. Try the M16. The grill is great and the showmanship of the cooks is outstanding. Something I would expect in a bigger city or a Benni Hanna. Usually no wait and the service is excellent.

Service was a little slow.the special rolls (fantastic roll) was amazing the Maki rolls were advantage and the sushi was also good .we didn't get hibachi but the have the tables where they cook at the table.

This is my first and probably only ever yelp review. That's how awful this place is. It's an overpriced nightmare of americanized asian-ish garbage and abusive totalitarian management. The sushi is way underportioned and made from sub-par ingredients. The fried rice is a mess of butter and undercooked grain. The "salad" is like a hospital cafeteria bowl of iceberg lettuce and "yum yum" sauce, which, if a customer does not touch, they put back on the cart to be re-served. And don't even touch the pad thai. Seriously, I know it's supposed to be a "Japanese" restaurant but I've had better pad thai at fast food restaurants. This place is to be avoided at any cost, you can honestly get an equally satisfying meal at Taco Bell for a tenth of the price.

I loved this restaurant. I took my father here for lunch on a Saturday (as he has only had Hibachi once back in 1975) and we both thoroughly enjoyed the food. I took away a star because I had my 7 month old daughter in tow and, while they had plenty of high chairs and booster seats, they did not have a changing table. I had to go out to my car and change her. The chef was wonderful and did a great job with the presentation and cooking of our food. The server was pretty busy as she was taking care of the entire restaurant so it took a while to get our drinks refilled but we didn't mind. The pricing isn't bad. My father and I both got the steak and shrimp hibachi lunch which was $13 per person and comes with soup, fried rice and veggies. The restaurant it's self is in need of some updating but, it isn't anything off putting. Just normal wear and tear. I think next time, I will take my father to the all you can eat sushi buffet they offer on Sundays.

We love this place. The portions are big and I love their udon stir fry noodles. Highly recommend them. We've had a couple of times the waiter didn't understand us but overall friendly staff.

I probably eat here once a week or at least once every two weeks. I love it. I almost always get take out, which is always ready quickly but every so often my boyfriend and I eat in. I haven't had their hibachi in awhile but I do remember enjoying it. They put on a show typical to most hibachi joints. There is a separate area if you are dining in for sushi, which we usually are. I deducted a star because when eating in, service can be hit or miss. Sometimes we will have a very attentive server, but the past few times it seems like it takes a long time to get a refill or ask a question. Note: the "yum yum" sauce that used to come with their fried rice has been absent when dining in lately and we have had to ask for it specifically, and the waitress often disappears before we can ask. They never neglect to give the sauce with take out rice but maybe people dining in have not been eating it, not sure. Overall, we love this place, but the waitresses could improve in some ways. Definitely don't let it stop you from trying this place.

Absolutely the best sushi anywhere around Charles town or Frederick. Always super crisp, fresh and delicious. Top quality ingredients and an unusually friendly staff. Must try.

Went to Ginza with a few co-workers for the "office special". We have been there many times before and assumed we would receive the same quality and service that we were accustomed to. Unfortunately, we did not. Our waitress was rude and never smiled. Our food quality was poor and the portions were tiny. One of my coworkers ordered hibachi steak and it looked like ground beef. When it was time to pay our bill the waitress disappeared. We waited about 10 minutes and finally hailed a manger to help us settle our bills. This use to be a favored lunch spot but I wont going back anytime in the near future.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend who lives locally and orders for delivery, often. We were very pleased. It was enjoyed by all! The service was great, the food was delicious and the entertainment was wonderful. We look forward to going back, especially when we have a race/casino night out!

Out in the wilds of Charles Town, West Virginia, there's a place to get decent sushi. Not at the casino, where you run the same risk of food poisoning as you run winning the jackpot. This, is quality sushi. I went in and found a menu that included a "sushi dinner" item, which is similar to the Japanese "omakase"; this means chef's choice. I got a great sampling of fresh sushi and it was all great. Fresh, tasty, and good.
(4)Serra K.
I love the food n show! But I always get the runs when I leave. Gr8 for dieters like me!
(5)Angie D.
The food here is steadily satisfying, yet "some" staff members aren't quite as friendly and accommodating as others. This is the only Japanese Steakhouse so they are in good shape, but it would be nice to feel like your business is appreciated rather than like you're an inconvenience.

My husband and I enjoy the hibachi experience and have visited several such places, mostly good, some better than others. After seeing good reviews we decided to try Ginza while we were away in Charles Town. Big mistake. This place ranks at the very bottom of our list. The experience seems typical at first, but we quickly realized Ginza was...different. The salad and miso soup came right out as normal...except the miso soup was beef broth with some mushrooms and such tossed in to look like miso...and I'm a vegetarian. Not cool but not the end of the world. Then the chef set the grill on fire and made his volcano and all that jazz...all your typical hibachi tricks. Then it was time to fry the rice. I've never seen it done this way before. Instead of heaps of oil and soy sauce, it was heaps of butter and yum yum sauce. I felt sick just watching. But, I figured we were on vacation and unhealthy is often tasty so I took a bite....it was tasteless .....and crunchy. AWFUL texture. My husband and I BOTH ordered hibachi vegetables. We didn't straight out say "hey, we're vegetarian" but, we've never had to. The remaining 3 people at our table ordered steak and shrimp, which the chef prepared first. But, this is where enough was enough. He cooks the steak and shrimp, serves it to our neighbors, then takes the filthy spatula dripping with fat and blood, puts it on our vegetables, then moves them from the clean, undisturbed portion of the grill right into the meat juices. I audibly groaned at this point but it wasn't noticed. At this point I was starving so I forced myself to eat what I could (which wasn't great to begin with), paid the tab, and tipped well. I didn't want anything but to talk to someone without causing a scene and leave. I asked for a manager, explained the situation and that I didn't want anything but to make her aware for the future....and she immediately put the blame on me for not blatantly saying "I'm a vegetarian" despite nearly half of our table ordering ONLY VEGETABLES for dinner. no apology, no empathy, just a nonchalant "you should have told them right away." Unbelievable. If you have any type of food allergy or dietary preference, expect this place to be inconsiderate and be sure to draw attention to yourself if you do need accommodation. If you don't, expect lackluster food in comparison to a typical hibachi experience. Either way, I'm clueless as to how this place has such good reviews.

First ate here in 2010 and visited frequently for a period of a couple weeks. At that time it was really good. The sushi chef was excellent and skillful in creating one of a kind tasty treats, such as "Uni soup" served in a cucumber shot glass. With that said, on Thursday I visited for the first time in 5 yrs. I was not impressed. The sashimi portions were tiny and were not the freshest. The hibachi chef put on a good show, however that didn't make up for the food. Extra large portion of fired rice, small portion of veggies, small portion of steak, and over cooked rubbery shrimp. It's a shame, but this place seems to have gone downhill in the last few years.
(3)Kimberly C.
The food was excellent, but nothing you would not expect from a hibachi restaurant. I was underwhelmed with my sushi, but my co-worker was very happy with her rolls. The service was painfully slow but once dinner was started it went quickly. It was right near our hotel and was worthwhile to go, especially since we were not sure in that area we would find Japanese that we would like!
(3)Kay G.
Ginza, Ginza, Ginza, I liked the rolls, but their "All you can eat" day is pretty ridiculous, you have to finish whats on your plate before you can even order your second round, so then you are stuck waiting another 20 minutes for your rolls, also, I brought my 6 year old son, who loves sushi might I add and I offered him a roll and the "owner" lady literally chopped my head off for offering my own child a roll. NOT OK, I pay for it, I should be able to offer my child some. I will never go back here for the "all you can eat rolls", also, their is one little waitress there who is SO rude, she acts like we force her to be there, the look on her face says "I HATE MY JOB, SO DON'T TALK TO ME" I loathe having her a waitress. Also, the hibachi is good but EVERY time I eat it, the bathroom screams my name for about an hour. So its a lose/lose I guess with this place. I only go when I am in the mood for Hibachi since they have 5.99 lunch specials during the week. That's the only high light of this place. PERIOD. I would not recommend it.
(1)Nicole L.
Always excellent! I love the hibachi, but the Eel and Avocado sushi roll is my favorite menu item. Friendly and kind staff and very entertaining chefs. I always bring my son (6 now, been taking him there since he was born) because the staff are so kid friendly, but it's great for a romantic evening out too. Excellent food and excellent service!
(5)Max W.
This place is similar to my local ISP. Friendly staff but the product isn't that great and you have no other option. As someone who loves Japanese food, it's a shame that there isn't more competition in the area. This place really doesn't have to try hard. People will always come back because they really don't know any better.

I have eaten at this place twice, and both times it has been disgusting. The second time was the final straw: my stomach was in knots after I ate. The very first time I ate here I got a sushi combo that came with a bowl of miso soup. What I got was a bowl of brownish clear liquid with 3 or 4 paper thin mushrooms in it, and a cloud of tofu bits that had settled to the bottom. Very bland, simply tasted like warm salty water. The sushi rolls were tiny, about the size of a quarter in diameter. They crumbled apart when I chewed. Absolutely disgusting. The second time was about a month later. I ordered pad thai. When my food arrived, I was appalled at what was placed in front of me: neon orange rice, with crumbled up peanuts (the type you'd sprinkle atop an ice cream sundae) and sliced unpeeled oranges on top. There were slivers of meat (unsure if it was chicken or pork) and the entire dish had a horrible smell to it. The rice was old and crunchy, and in addition to the peanuts, it felt like I was eating Grape Nuts cereal. My coworkers had the same thing and also stated that theirs smelled weird. I ate only a small portion of this dish, and had to stop midway because my stomach felt queasy. I'll spare the details of what happened later. I always wondered why my boss refused to eat with my coworkers when they stated they were going to Ginza. Now I know why. I will never ever return to this place.
(1)Joan R.
Best Japanese steak house I have ever visited. I have taken many friends here, and they say the same thing. I have only ever had the hibachi, so I can't attest to the sushi.
(5)Rob M.
This place is pretty good all things considered, even better considering the quality of other restaurants around it, and the lack of Teppanyaki / Sushi. Atmosphere was good, as was the service. Food was above average. A few type of Sake available but not many.
(4)Mujer B.
They did have a pretty large menu with lots of sushi and dinner options. I ordered the Luisa Roll and Shrimp Tempura roll. The Luisa roll was different. It was a shrimp roll topped with spicy crab meat that was delicious! The shrimp tempura roll was ok. The shrimp in both rolls seemed a bit stale. If the service would have been better, I would have given it 4 stars. Unfortunately, I waited over 40 min for two rolls. Parties that came after me were getting their entrees before me (having been there about 20 min before them). I would like to give it another go hoping for a better experience. Maybe I'll come in the middle of the week instead of a Friday.

It was crowded on Friday night and lots of people were ordering sushi which is what my daughter and I came for. The overall decor and furnishings are average but decent. It is much bigger inside than it looks from the outside. Booths, tables, a sushi bar for maybe 8 and roughly 6 or so Teppanyaki tables. The service was good and the wait time for our food to come was reasonable considering the amount of people in the restaurant. I had the Sushi dinner for $19 which included a small salad with super fresh lettuce and a tasty miso soup. The miso soup was not overly extravagant but contained fresh green onion and small chunks of tofu and was very flavorful. 10 pieces of sushi and a California roll made up my platter and it was all super fresh and well made. My daughter had a Cal roll and a Salmon roll that she liked very much. After clearing the plates they brought out fresh orange halves to finish the meal. This is not the fanciest place I have eaten sushi at but it was very fresh and I would go back again. My daughter wants to return just to try the Teppanyaki table. The have Sunday night (maybe 5:30pm - 9pm AYCE Sushi which might be worth checking out also. Overall 4 stars and they would have to update the interior to get a 5th. Great sushi and reasonably priced. Will repoeat!

By far the worst experience I had in a restaurant. The service was outstanding but the management was horrendous. We went in for their Sunday all you can eat sushi. You can order 3 rolls at a time. The first round took a little while but we got it. The second round took almost 45 minutes to an hour. We asked the management if we can take the rolls to go because it took so long. They said no. Their explanation was they didn't expect to be a busy day and everyone have to wait. We offered to pay for just the three rolls we ate and forget the other rolls we ordered. Again, that was denied and they said your foods are coming. The older Chinese man brought our food out and said here with a bit of attitude. And one of our friend didn't want the rolls and wanted to just pay for the 3 rolls. The older Chinese man started raising his voice and started to argue with my friend. The Chinese man said you pay full price. Finally a Chinese lady cut in and pushed the Chinese guy away. Now my friend is pissed and want them to comp the three rolls. After few minutes arguing with the Chinese lady she finally comped his three rolls and told him never to come back. And the rest of paid full amount. At no point did they apologize for the delay on the food. It was the worst costumer service I've received. We weren't being unreasonable but they were so greedy. I don't know how they stay in business. If I could give this place a negative stars, I would. On the way out. He called us 王八蛋 (sons of bitch in Chinese). I speak Chinese but my friends don't. These people should not be in a customer service business. The food was so so. Don't go there when they are busy because the management don't know how to deal with people. Eat at your own risk.

Just dropped in for a few rolls for lunch... 3 sushi rolls for $12 ain't bad.... The place was nice and everyone was friendly Generally, sushi made by non-Japanese people is rarely perfect. As I was trained in Japan, I know the difference, and I usually sound critical when I explain it. Today's short grain rice was undercooked and also didn't have enough rice vinegar. It was almost a bit crunchy.... The Eel roll didn't have enough eel in it, I couldn't taste it at all. Overall, this is a nice place with a good visual food presentation. I would rate the Sushi as 'meh'.
(3)Andrew W.
Very friendly Chinese not Japanese ownership and staff - all you can eat sushi Sunday (used to be TUesday is well worth it fresh a grade sushi but not quite "to die for" pleasant atmosphere I will go back. I go once a month. Hibachi area fun too if that's your thing. Wait staff is funny (i.e., strange)- they are usually pretty fast, a couple of the waitresses don't quite speak English so it is an adventure - but never unpleasant.

Ginza offers both the tabletop teppanyaki "dinner and a show" food, prepared by chefs jugging their knives, flipping food to people, and shooting flames out of an onion volcano as they cook that has been popular for ages. They also have a sushi bar as well, with a wide variety of options. The menu for the teppanyaki tabletop food is fairly standard. You choose which protein or proteins you would like from steak, shrimp, chicken, scallops, or lobster, and the meal comes with salad, soup, a shrimp appetizer, fried rice with vegetables, and your chosen meat. The food is quite good, although nothing really makes it stand out from other Teppanyaki restaurants. Almost all of them seem to use the same seasonings, dipping sauces and such, so the food is very similar to other places that do teppanyaki style cooking. I do like the fried rice they make on the tabletop quite a bit. It is much lighter and less salty than the standard "rice soaked with soy sauce" that passes for fried rice at many take out places. The quality of the fish for the sushi is very good. The sushi menu has all of the standard fare, as well as some combos that will be new to most. Ginza does have to take responsibility for the fact that there are a lot less eels left in the world after their "Eel Special Roll" introduced me to eel and I loved it and can't stop eating it. I've even pestered the local grocery stores to get eel for me from time to time I enjoy it so much. The do an all you can eat sushi day once a week, although I am not sure what day it is now as it recently changed. For $20, you get as much as you want from a list of different types of sushi, and there is a pretty wide selection from which to choose. Also, Ginza offers local delivery for orders over $30. It is a great alternative to the standard pizza and subs that are pretty much the only other delivery option in the area. Recently, Ginza has expanded the menu to include a lot more items. This seems to be in response to the economic downturn in order to draw more people in to the business. I have not tried any of these dished, and I have heard mixed reviews about them. However, in my opinion, going to a Tappanyaki steakhouse/Sushi bar and ordering chinese food is kind of like driving to a burger joint to order a salad: it's a pretty dumb plan in the first place, and if you're disappointed, it shouldn't come as a surprise. I have eaten at Ginza dozens of times, and I have only encountered a few missteps in the years it has been open. At times the rice for the sushi has been a little plain or dry, but that has happened very rarely. I think this may just be due to a slowdown in business and the rice drying out on slow days. Thankfully, it is something I have encountered very rarely. So visit Ginza and enjoy... but stay away from the eel. It's delicious, BUT IT'S MINE! ALLL MINE!!!!
(4)Matt H.
Excellent food and service. My wife and I visit probably once a week and are greeted with a smile every time. The chefs are great and funny. The sushi at this place is also excellent. The prices are pretty reasonable for a Japanese Steakhouse. Highly recommend.
(5)Tony C.
Best sushi in the area, hands down. Tokyo, Asian Gardens, China Buffet (at the bottom of my list) all take a back seat to this place. The ambiance and decor is really tastefully done. I get tired of going into Asian restaurants and seeing every little elephant, dragon or statue of Buddha they can find. Here, it all matches... and isn't overwhelming at all. We were greeted, told them we were there for sushi and were seated near the sushi bar. They gave us the menu and took our drink order right away. After deciding what we wanted to eat, we placed our order. On a kind of side note, there were three TVs going in the immediate vicinity. One had CNN, one had Fox News, and one was playing either a prime time lineup or repeats of old shows (one was Seinfeld). I've always found TVs in restaurants to be distracting, and they take away from the dining experience. At least the sound wasn't on... On another side note (I'm a big side note kinda guy), this is also a hibachi grill place, which is located separately from the sushi bar, and it looked like they had eight stations. One or two of them were going while we were there, but they provided no real distraction at all, except when one of the chefs did the "burn a bunch of oil in a truly frightening escalation" that heats up the entire place for a few seconds. I like the food in those, but it all really kind of tastes the same. Now, on to the sushi. I ordered the Green Dragon, House Roll, and Salmon Tempura roll. All very different tastes and flavors. They provided plenty of ginger and wasabi, and offered regular soy and lite (low sodium) soy sauce. As you might expect, there are no forks on the table, but there are cloth napkins at each place and FRESH flowers on the tables (funny note: the vases were old sake bottles). As expected, the presentation was very colorful and bright on big plates with the small side bowls for soy sauce. As a second order (it was AYCE Tuesday for one low price) I got the spicy California roll... it was spicy, but not overly so (spicy is a flavor enhancement, not a method by which to singe your tastebuds off) and it was also very good. I'm not going to describe the sushi, it has to be experienced. But ALL of it was good. The service was good, the price was right, and overall we had a good experience. It's not a matter of if we are going back, it's when. :)

My dad and I decided to give this place another try last night as its been sometime since we last came (it was not at all busy on Thursday night). We sat Hibachi side with a married couple, and while the cook was attempting to flip food into peoples mouth I didn't feel like being a seal and participating... he ended up throwing the food into my hair as I was trying to eat my sushi and not even looking (I didn't even order hibachi, and him joking that he could get it down my shirt instead, eh... lil awkward). I did however end up getting about 2 sake shots squirted into my mouth by the cook, can't complain about that aside from it splattering onto myself a bit. A lot of the staff seemed a bit stuck up at times (where my dad didn't want a drink refill he got one anyway, and while the lady next to us did want a refill she got a bit ignored), our cook was Asian but not Japanese. My dads shrimp and lobster was a bit overcooked, but everyone seemed to enjoy the scallops. I had a "Happy Combo" (around $15) trio of sushi which was okay, nothing mind blowing, the sushi menu was a bit complex and a lil confusing so I'd rather they had a check sheet. Not the worst Japanese food I've had but not the best either. I'd probably rate this place at **2.8 stars**.

I've been all around the US, had sushi at some of the highest rated Japanese restaurants. (e.g. Uchi in Austin, TX) ... Las Vegas, New York, Florida, Louisiana, California (I could go on, but who really cares.) and this place is at the top 5 of my Japanese list. My ranking is based on how often I think of a certain restaurant to find one close to it. You know, when you really crave something then think to yourself... man, I really wish I could go to *blah blah*. But instead, you end up at rice roll mc frozen fishsticks, spending too much money and leave feeling abused, broke and still hungry. Don't get me wrong, this is no Uchi... hah! But as far as random sushi places go, this place is great. Being that I once lived and worked close to Ginza, there was a time when I frequented. (Sometimes twice a week) I've tried a little of everything and was never disappointed. The creativity and skill with some of the rolls are that I've only seen at much more expensive restaurants. The staff here are always nice and the place is new. They actually offer a few partial privacy booths, sushi bar, full alcohol bar, and a hibachi area. Though really, sit at the bar like a real sushi lover and order about 5 different rolls. Sure, I've had a few good experiences at some other places around the area, but do yourself a favor. Avoid the rest and just go to Ginza.
(5)Stacie L.
We went on a recommendation from a friend for my birthday. We have little ones so the teppanyaki is out of the question, so we sat in the booth. Ugh, dont sit in the booth, its dirty!!!! The friend rice looked like it was uncle ben's boxed rice and that is definitely a no-no! We tried asking what kind of rice it was and they looked at us like we were talking a foreign language. All we could get was that it was japanese rice. The only reason I didn't give it a 1 star, the sushi was alright and we didnt try the teppanyaki so, who knows maybe that's better... but I will never find out, lol.
(2)tracy d.
I thought this place was great. I was taken here specifically for the sushi. I'd never tried it before! I fell in love with it. Can't wait to have more. I especially liked the spicy tuna roll. We sat at one of the hibachi grill tables and had filet, shrimp, and scallops for our main entree. It was all excellent. But I'm going back for the sushi!!
(5)Megan S.
My boyfriend and I went recently for all-you-can-eat sushi and the price was great for the quality. We plan on going back soon.
(5)Keith N.
Great sushi and steak! I plan to go back every time I visit Charles Town. Great value!
(5)Jes S.
This place was horrible. The interior is well decorated, as others mentioned. And the staff are friendly, also as others mentioned. But the food was just awful. We didn't have the sushi or sit at a grill. My father had the shrimp fried rice. He eats almost exclusively fast food and said that the shrimp fried rice at the worst Chinese restaurant in town was better than here. Given that all he had on his plate was greasy-looking rice with some egg bits and clearly overcooked shrimp in it, I'm inclined to believe him. My $20 scallop dinner plate came with, according to the menu: a soup, a salad with Japanese dressing, a shrimp appetizer, fried rice, and vegetables. What'd that look like? Soup: A tiny bowl of beef broth with gunk on the bottom and two nearly transparent slivers of tiny mushrooms floating on top. The broth was good, but there wasn't much of it. Salad: A small bowl of very wet iceberg lettuce with a very poorly sliced tomato half thrown on the side, and a big dollop of Thousand Island dressing in the middle. Iceberg lettuce? On a $20 plate? And Thousand Island dressing passed off as "Japanese"? Are you serious? Shrimp appetizer: Two tiny grilled shrimps dropped in the middle of the main course plate. The main course: A fair portion of undercooked, wet scallops with flavorless, greasy fried rice beside overcooked, wet vegetables, all atop a bunch of wetness and covered in a bunch of wetness. It is REALLY hard to undercook scallops. And fried rice is the easiest dish in the world to prepare. Only people who have no idea what they are doing could screw up fried rice. Given the six or seven grills in the back dining room, how is it even possible that the vegetables were all wet? And did it really not occur to them to pour off the cup or so of dark water at the bottom of the bowl? Was that supposed to be "sauce"? This, for $20, isn't merely scandalous: It ought to be illegal. I'll never go back. I feel I need to say something to people who are not from this area: There is no good food in Charles Town. It is all terrible. Even the local places are as bad as chain restaurants--some of them are much worse. Dish used to be decent, but it sucks now, too. Shu Chen's is probably the best food you'll find. It's at least edible. Most Yelpers probably know by now that some people's 5-star ratings aren't worth crap. There are apparently people who would love dog food if you put it on a human plate and charged them $20 for it. Really, the state of American taste buds is depressing. If you're not from Charles Town, and you need to eat here, don't trust any of the ratings on Yelp unless it is apparent from the poster's comment that s/he knows something about food. Of course, if a poster knows something about food, s/he's not going to give anything in Charles Town a high rating... so you should probably just get out of town.

Avoid! I went to this place right after it opened and it was pretty good. I went two days ago and I have been sick to my stomach ever since. The hibachi guy was very lackluster and the teriyaki salmon I got seemed ok at the time. I swung by the ladies room on my way out... Boy I wish I would have seen it first before eating there! Gross! The trash can was beyond grungy as was the entire bathroom. The health department seriously needs to investigate this place soon before someone else gets really sick.
